Roadkill

We hit one skunk and avoided a deer on the drive to and from the K-State Veterinary Hospital last night. There's a pretty long, dark, desolate stretch between here and Manhattan, so it's not the best place to be driving late at night. Seems rather ironic to be taking an animal to a vet clinic for help only to kill another one on the way.

I've never seen a person take such decisive, controlled measures to avoid hitting an animal in the roadway only to hit it as squarely as if aiming for it. B apologized, but I knew she'd done everything possible to avoid it except let the better driver take the wheel. (I'm gonna get it for that one)
Nellie enjoyed smelling the skunk stench for a few miles anyway. It took her mind off the paraplegia I'm sure. ;)

Shortly after hitting the skunk, B expertly maneuvered the vehicle to avoid hitting another object ahead of us in the darkened roadway: a cup

As I was driving on the way back around 1 A.M., B yelled "Deer!" right before it took to bounding over the roadway in front of us. You should have seen it. It looked like a deer caught in headlights. With B's eagle-eye vision and my cat like reflexes, tragedy was thwarted and the deer has a great story to tell all her relatives.

Sounds like a lot of the roads back in Tennessee near where Shawn and I lived for a while. Be careful!

We're all still sending you guys positive thoughts, prayers, hugs, etc. for Nellie's speedy recovery!!!

Just think, if the deer was on steroids, that is exactly what most gymbunnies look like at the club after a night of too many drugs in the bloodstream.

Our thoughts are still with Nellie. And now the skunk. Poor skunk, we hardly knew ye. Tomato juice will kill the smell. Don’t ask me how I know. I said don’t ask.

Ok...you ARE going to get it. I could have avoided the skunk...swerving violently to the left or right. And if you would have had your seat belt on AND if Nellie wasn't laying helpless in the backseat with an unrestrained passenger...I would have.

I live around a heavily wooded area. Running into a deer is always a great fear. Besides having the fear of killing one I've seen the damage they can do the vehicle itself. I'm glad everyone is safe save for the poor skunk. Which by the way, I don't have an aversion toward the smell. Strange I know.

I suppose out of the 2 the skunk was the better thing to have hit - although the skunk would probably disagree! I'm glad to hear Nellie's holding her own, I hope she continues to improve.

B...it's okay. I think that we have special dispensation in such cases.
